2002 California Indian Basketweavers Gathering
We are pleased to announce that the 12th annual California Indian Basketweavers Gathering will be held June 21-23 at Chaw'se/Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park. Friday, June 21 is reserved for California Indian basketweavers and their guests, while Saturday and Sunday will be open to all.
If you are interested in volunteering on Friday (or at any time during the Gathering), please let us know. Otherwise, please plan to attend the Gathering on Saturday to enjoy basketry demonstrations and sales, the Basketweavers Showcase, panel discussions, the annual CIBA raffle and evening dancing and cultural sharing in the Roundhouse. You are also welcome Sunday morning for a wrap-up session and closing circle. See schedule below.
Where: Chaw'se is between Pine Grove and Volcano, 8 miles northeast of Jackson, and an hour plus drive from Sacramento (see map below.) The 135 acre park is nestled in a valley at 2400' elevation, with open meadows and large valley oaks. The park preserves some 1,185 bedrock mortar holes, and contains a museum/visitor's center, campground and large roundhouse.
(See Chaw'se website at: www.sierra.parks.state.ca.us/igr/igr_main.htm).
Camping: Pine Acres Resort (209/296-4650) is a privately run campground a few miles away that has full RV hook-ups, plus regular campsites. Reservations are recommended.
The Chaw'se campground will be reserved for basketweavers, Gathering staff and volunteers who register in advance. Campground assignments will be made by the CIBA office.
Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs throughout the Gathering, including set up, clean up, registration and sales tables, kitchen help, Showcase, parking, camping, etc. Please let us know if you are available for any of these jobs and our volunteer coordinator will contact you. Questions: Call CIBA at 530/272-5500 or email us at ciba@ciba.org
Parking: Parking is limited at Chaw'se, and we urge you to carpool with others. Please look for a signed parking area in Pine Grove, and take a free shuttle ride to Chaw'se and back.
Lodging: See short lodging list below. A more comprehensive list is available from CIBA by snail mail, or from the Amador County Chamber of Commerce at 209/223-0350, or on their website at www.amadorcountychamber.com.
Air travel: The closest airport is Sacramento, about a 75-minute drive away.
Food: There will be food concessions on Saturday. People who are volunteering to help at the Gathering may share in meals provided for participants at the times they volunteer.
CIBA Fundraiser Raffle: Our annual fundraiser, featuring California Indian baskets and other great prizes, takes place the evening of Saturday, June 22, at the Gathering. You may order tickets from the CIBA office ($1 each; they come in packets of 20). Need not be present to win.
